Play a notice-and-name food game

Choose a food already on the menu and say one thing you notice: the banana is curved, or the toast has a brown edge. Invite your toddler to add a word or point to the detail; watching is also a way to join.

University of Utah Health's May 20, 2026 guidance recommends describing food through color, texture, and temperature without pressure or good-and-bad labels. This guide was checked October 8, 2026. Give your child words they can use

Start with a description rather than a quiz. Choose words that match the food in front of you, since preparation can change its texture.

  • Looking: Point out a color, shape, or pattern, such as a green pea or spots on a banana peel.
  • Watching preparation: Describe how cooked potato changes as an adult mashes it: now it looks lumpy or smooth.
  • Eating by choice: If your child takes a bite, offer a word such as soft, chewy, sweet, or sour. Let them disagree with your description.
  • Using pictures: Stick to visible details. A picture cannot tell you how that particular food tastes or feels.

When your toddler says yucky

You can acknowledge the reaction without arguing: you do not like that today. If your child wants to keep talking, offer a description such as strong smell or sticky texture; otherwise, leave it there.

The activity ends without a required bite or a correct answer. Keep your own observations simple rather than trying to persuade your child that a food is delicious.

Use a food spin as a conversation prompt

During shared play, explore a food spin in Snack Spinner and name a visible detail together. Later, if that food is already part of your meal, notice how the real version looks compared with the picture.

These description prompts are activities you lead outside the app. You do not need to buy the spun food, serve it immediately, or ask your child to taste it.

Decide whether Snack Spinner fits your food play

You can play with everyday foods or pictures alone. Snack Spinner adds Bear, bright wheels, food spins, and tiny lessons for exploring fruits, vegetables, proteins, and grains.

It also includes treats, trophies, parent reports, grocery ideas, and visible progress. It is available for iPhone, iPad, and Android, with no ads, no subscription, and parent-gated purchase flows.

If your family would enjoy that starting point, try Snack Spinner from the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/yum-yum-go/id6744628294) or [Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manan.yumyumgo).

FAQ

How can I play a food vocabulary game with a toddler who uses few words?

Name one visible detail yourself and invite your child to point. They can also watch or gesture; the game does not require repeating words or answering questions.

Does my toddler have to taste food to play?

No. Start with colors, shapes, and visible changes during preparation. Save taste descriptions for occasions when your child chooses to eat, and accept their own description.
